Washington is a community property state, dividing marital assets 50/50 in divorce. There is no mandatory separation period—divorce can be filed with a 90-day waiting period before finalization. King County Superior Court Family Law Division handles divorce, custody, and support. Washington applies a "best interest of the child" standard for custody, considering each parent's involvement, emotional ties, and stability. Seattle's progressive courts have experience with culturally diverse families. Mahr agreements are generally enforceable as prenuptial contracts under Washington law. Arab families with tech industry stock options and RSUs face complex property division requiring valuation expertise.
Our Arabic-speaking custody attorneys guide you through every step of your case in Seattle.
We assess your situation, the child's needs, and develop a custody strategy. This includes evaluating any international risks, domestic violence history, and each parent's involvement in the child's life.
We draft a proposed parenting plan covering physical custody schedule, decision-making authority, holidays, vacations, and communication. For Arab families, this often includes provisions for religious education and cultural practices.
Many courts require mediation before trial. We negotiate with the other parent's attorney to reach agreement. Mediation is often more productive for Arab families who want to minimize public conflict.
A court-appointed evaluator interviews both parents, the child, and sometimes teachers and other figures. They observe parent-child interactions and make recommendations to the judge. We prepare you thoroughly for this critical step.

Testimonials
Read what Arab American families in Seattle say about our Arabic-speaking custody attorneys.
“My ex claimed my business income was much higher than it was to get more child support. My lawyer brought in a forensic accountant and showed the real numbers in King County court. The judge set a fair amount based on actual income. He spoke Arabic and understood what it's like running a small business here.”

“My divorce involved a mahr agreement and community property issues. Washington is a community property state so everything had to be divided. My lawyer understood Islamic marriage contracts and fought for my mahr to be enforced separately. I got custody through a parenting plan and a fair settlement.”

“My divorce was complicated because Washington uses parenting plans instead of custody orders. My lawyer drafted a plan that protected my time with the kids and got the court to enforce my mahr as a separate contract. She understood Syrian family values and explained everything in Arabic. I felt heard.”

Understanding Washington's family law statutes helps you protect your rights and plan your case. Here's what you need to know.
Washington is a pure no-fault divorce state. The only ground for divorce is that the marriage is irretrievably broken. The court cannot consider fault in dividing property or awarding maintenance.
Washington is a community property state. All property acquired during the marriage is presumed community property and is subject to "just and equitable" division — which is not necessarily 50/50. Separate property (owned before marriage or received as gift/inheritance) may also be divided in some circumstances.
Unlike some community property states, Washington courts have discretion to divide community property in a way that is "just and equitable" rather than strictly 50/50. Courts may also divide separate property if justice requires it.
Best interests of the child
No
Washington uses "parenting plans" instead of custody orders. A parenting plan specifies decision-making authority and the residential schedule. The court considers the best interests of the child and encourages both parents' involvement when safe.
Washington uses the income shares model based on both parents' combined net incomes and the number of children. The Washington State Child Support Schedule provides detailed guidelines.
Support continues to 18, or through high school completion if the child is still enrolled and under 19. Post-secondary support is not automatically ordered but may be agreed upon.
