Minneapolis has the largest Somali population in the United States, many of whom speak Arabic. The community has achieved remarkable political representation. Ilhan Omar's election to Congress in 2018 was a milestone, but Arab and Somali Americans also serve on the Minneapolis City Council, the school board, and in the state legislature. This political engagement reflects a community that has moved beyond survival mode into active civic participation, though many residents still face significant legal challenges—from immigration cases to employment discrimination to tenant rights in a housing market that has grown increasingly expensive.
