Minneapolis has the largest Somali population in the United States, many of whom speak Arabic. The Cedar-Riverside neighborhood is known as "Little Mogadishu," and its towering apartment buildings house thousands of Somali families who have transformed this corner of Minneapolis into one of the most distinctively East African neighborhoods in North America.

The Somali community's roots in Minneapolis date to the early 1990s, when refugees from the Somali civil war were resettled through Lutheran and Catholic social services agencies. Minnesota's strong social safety net, established refugee infrastructure, and relatively low cost of living made it an attractive destination. Once the first families established themselves, chain migration brought relatives and friends, creating a self-reinforcing cycle that has made Minneapolis the undisputed capital of Somali America.

Arabic plays a central role in this community. Most Somali residents study Arabic for religious purposes, and many are fluent speakers. Somali businesses along Lake Street and in the Midtown Global Market often post signs in Somali, Arabic, and English. The mosques that serve Cedar-Riverside and the Phillips neighborhood conduct services in Arabic, and Quranic schools teach children Arabic literacy alongside their Somali mother tongue.

Beyond the Somali majority, Minneapolis hosts smaller but significant Egyptian, Palestinian, and Moroccan communities. Northeast Minneapolis and the suburbs of Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center have attracted Arab families seeking more space and affordable housing. These communities, while overshadowed by the larger Somali presence, maintain their own cultural institutions, restaurants, and social networks.

The community has achieved remarkable political representation. Ilhan Omar's election to Congress in 2018 was a milestone, but Arab and Somali Americans also serve on the Minneapolis City Council, the school board, and in the state legislature. This political engagement reflects a community that has moved beyond survival mode into active civic participation, though many residents still face significant legal challenges—from immigration cases to employment discrimination to tenant rights in a housing market that has grown increasingly expensive.
